The Fourth Pillar of Umrah – ‘ Sai’e & Tahallul ’

Posted by Hashim Abd Ghani On 10:57 AM

Sai’e  is depicted by waliking and hurrying  back and forth seven times between As-Safâ ( الصفا ) and Al-Marwah ( المروة  ),  which are two small mountains now located in the Masjidil Haram in Makkah, Saudi Arabia during the ritual pilgrimages of Hajj and Umrah. It is a movement with an aim, acting as what Siti Hajar did during the search for water for her baby. Performing the Sai'e, serves to commemorate Siti Hajar’s for water and God's mercy in answering prayers.

When completing the tawaf procedures, two units prayers at Maqam Ibrahim and drinking zamzam water, proceed to Massa’, between the mountains  As-Safâ and Al-Marwah.  Perform the ‘ritual walking’ between those two mountains seven times. The distance between As-Safâ and Al-Marwah is approximately 450 m, so that seven trips amount to roughly 3.15 km. The two points and the path between them are now inside a long gallery and triple storey that forms part of the Masjidil Haram. The Noble Qur’an narrates :

“Verily, As-Safâ and Al-Marwah (two mountains in Makkah) are of the Symbols of Allah. So it is not a sin on him who performs Hajj or Umrah (pilgrimage) of the House (the Kaabah at Makkah) to perform the going between them (As-Safâ and Al-Marwah). And whoever does good voluntarily, then verily, Allah is All-Recogniser, All-Knower”. (Al-Baqarah 2:158)

“O Allah, I want to conduct Sai’e between As-Safâ and Al-Marwah 7 times, Sai’e Umrah because of Allah”.
The reciting of religious rituals in between every run is voluntary and can be done accordingly by various teaching. The ritual format below is a suggestion.

Sai'e Lane

Recite ‘doa’ at Al Marwah  after the completion of Sai’e :

Upon completion of Sai’e with seven walks between As-Safâ to Al Marwah, recite a ‘doa’ (request) at Al Marwah. It is voluntary and the suggested ‘doa’ below :

“O my/our Lord, receive our ritual, for You are The All Hearing and The All Knowing. O my Lord, make us as the people that prostrate (during prayers) obey You, make amongst our descendent that obey You, show us the ways and places of our hajj/umrah, and receive our repentance. For You The Ever Returning and The Most Merciful.”

Recite ‘doa’ at Al Marwah  before ‘Tahallul’ :

Before cutting your hair  or shaving, while holding the hair  recite the suggested ‘doa’.  For man at least three pieces of hair and for women to cut the end of their long hair at a fingers’ length.

“O Allah The Great, O Allah, this is my top part of the head which is under holding, so make every hair cut an enlightenment for me on The Judgment Day and forgive my sins, O my Lord, The Ever Forgiving. All praises are for Allah that have completed my rituals, bestow one welfare for every single of my hair. Diminish with it one impious, lift me with one status, forgive me and those peoples that shave, cut their hair and all muslimin. O Allah add my faith, confidence, give guidance and forgive us and our parents, wife and our children, and blessings and peace be upon our master, Prophet Muhammad   صلى الله عليه وسلم , and upon his good and pure family and Companions”.

Lastly, you can remove the ihram garments and wear regular clothes - feel free.
