Prophet Sâlih عليه السلام was sent to the dwelling people of Thamûd that lived in Hajjar, a territory situated somewhere between Tabuk, Al-Hijaz and Ash-Sham (Syria and surrounding regions) in the southeastern part of Midian (Madyan), which is situated east of the Gulf of Al-‘Aqabah.  Chiseled out of stone, their dwellings are still preserved. The name is Sâlih عليه السلام  bin Ubaid bin Maseh bin Ubaid bin Hadir bin Thamud bin Athir bin Iram bin Nuh عليه السلام .

The Thamûd worshiped idols, then Allâh sent Prophet Sâlih  عليه السلام to both advise and remind about their duties towards Allâh. The miracle of Prophet Sâlih  عليه السلام came with was the she-camel that came out of stone. Though they were warned not to, they slaughted that camel, and as a result of their disbelief and disobedience, they were destroyed.

The miracle of Prophet Sâlih  عليه السلام came with was the she-camel that came out of stone. Though they were warned not to, they slaughted that camel, and as a result of their disbelief and disobedience, they were destroyed.

And to Thamûd ( people, We sent ) their brother Sâlih. He said : “O my people! Worship Allâh You have no other llâh ( God ) but Him. ( Lâ ilâha illâllâh : none has the right to be worshiped but  Allâh). Indeed there has come to you a clear sign   (the miracle of the coming out of a huge she-camel from the midst of a rock) from your Lord. This she-camel of Allâh is a sign to you : so you leave her to graze in Allâh’s earth, and touch her not with harm, lest a painful torment should seize you. ( Al-A’râf 7 : 73 ).

So  they killed  the she-camel  and insolently defied the Commandment of their Lord and said :

 “ O Sâlih ! Bring about your threats if you are indeed one of the Messengers ( of  Allâh ). ( Al-A’râf 7 : 77 )

So when Our Commandment came, We saved Sâlih and those with him by a Mercy from us  from the disgrace of that Day. Verily, your Lord – He is the All-Strong, the All – Mighty. ( Hud 11: 66 ).

The only ones who were saved among them were Prophet Sâlih عليه السلام and those who believed in his Prophethood. After their people were destroyed, there are four versions where those survivors traveled to :

a.         Ramalah in Palestine, which is the strongest of the various views regarding where they went, for it was the closest fertile land to them.
b.         The people of Hadramaut say that Prophet Sâlih  عليه السلام  and his followers traveled to Hadramaut and settled there, because that is where they were originally from.
c.         Others have said that Prophet Sâlih عليه السلام and his followers remained in their dwellings.
d.         And yet others say that they traveled to Makkah and remained there unti they died and their graves are situated west ot the Kaabah.

Allâh punished the Thamud for their persistent practice of idol worship and for conspiring to kill the prophet whom He sent, the non-believers being struck by uproar and vibrated sound that made them dead, scattered in within their dwellings. Thus, the site has earned a superstitious reputation down to contemporary times as a cursed place.

In 2008, for its well-preserved remains from late antiquity, especially the 131 rock-cut monumental tombs, with their elaborately ornamented façades, of the Nabatean kingdom, UNESCO proclaimed Madain Sâlih as a site of patrimony, becoming Saudi Arabia's first World Heritage Site.
